Speaking from the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo issued a direct appeal to world leaders to find an “off-ramp” for the escalating conflict in the Middle East, urging a shift from military action to diplomatic negotiation. Also, in response to President Trump’s threats against Iran, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops released a statement condemning the targeting of civilian infrastructure. The statement called on the president to step back from the brink of war and seek a just settlement for the sake of peace and to prevent further loss of life.
