Catholic 101: The Power of Confession and the Act of Contrition Explained

In this sermon for the 18th Sunday after Pentecost, we reflect on the Gospel story of the healing of the paralytic — a powerful sign that Christ has divine authority to forgive sins.
Our Lord not only restores physical health but also shows His mercy through the forgiveness of sins, a power entrusted to His Church through the Sacrament of Confession.
Fr. reminds the faithful that confession is not an informal chat with a priest but a sacred sacrament with prescribed form and ritual, designed by the Church for the salvation of souls.
This “Catholic 101” teaching offers practical and spiritual guidance:
How to properly prepare for confession with an examination of conscience.
The correct way to enter the confessional and begin: “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.”
The importance of memorizing the Act of Contrition, not just for confession but as a daily act of repentance.
Why confession should be frequent, sincere, and reverent.
Fr. also reminds us that true repentance requires sorrow for sin, the firm purpose of amendment, and trust in God’s mercy. Even when confession is not available, a perfect Act of Contrition can restore grace to the soul.
In an age where the basics of the Catholic faith are often forgotten, this homily helps renew the faithful’s understanding of the Sacrament of Penance — one of the greatest gifts of Christ to His Church.
