Byzantine Saints: Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus at Tripoli in Syria (18 June)

The Holy Martyrs Leontius, Hypatius, and Theodulus are commemorated by the Church on June 18. Their inspiring witness reveals the power of faith, conversion, and steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ in the face of persecution.
Saint Leontius was a respected Roman military commander in Tripoli of Phoenicia during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. Known for his virtue, courage, and wisdom, he became a powerful witness for Christ among both soldiers and civilians. When the governor Adrian launched a campaign against Christians, Leontius became a target of persecution.
Sent to arrest him, the tribune Hypatius experienced a miraculous healing after invoking the God whom Leontius served. Along with the soldier Theodulus, he sought out Saint Leontius, received instruction in the Christian faith, and was baptized. Soon afterward, all three boldly confessed Christ before the authorities.
Despite severe torture, threats, and promises of reward, the holy martyrs refused to deny Jesus Christ. Saints Hypatius and Theodulus were executed after enduring brutal sufferings, while Saint Leontius remained steadfast through additional tortures before surrendering his soul to God. Their martyrdom remains a powerful testimony to the transforming grace of Christ and the courage of the early Christians.
