Byzantine Saints: Martyred Holy Fathers who were slain at the Monastery of Saint Savva (20 March)

On March 20, the Church commemorates the holy martyrs of the Monastery of St. Sabbas, including Saints John, Sergius, Patrick, and their companions—men who chose faithfulness to Christ over safety, even in the face of brutal persecution.
During the 8th century, Saracen raids devastated Christian communities around Jerusalem. Though the Lavra of St. Sabbas had been spared twice, the third attack would become a witness to extraordinary courage and sanctity.
Rather than flee to Jerusalem, these monks remained in the place where they had labored for their salvation. When the attackers came, they found no riches—only poverty, prayer, and unwavering faith.
The result was horrific: torture, fire, suffocation, and martyrdom. Yet even in the face of death, these holy fathers refused to betray Christ or surrender the sacred treasures of the Church.
Saint Patrick courageously offered himself in place of others. Saint Sergius protected the holy vessels. Saint John endured unspeakable suffering.
Eighteen monks perished in a cave, suffocated for refusing to renounce their faith.
Their story is not just history—it is a call to steadfastness, courage, and total surrender to God.
May their witness strengthen us to remain faithful, no matter the cost.
