Pope Leo has long held a deep devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel, a title of the Virgin Mary closely tied to his Augustinian roots. We learn more about the small Italian town of Genazzano, home to a miraculous painting of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio enshrined in an Augustinian church. Venerated by saints and popes throughout history, many have come to the shrine to ask Our Lady of Good Counsel for advice. It was here that Pope Leo XIV made his first trip outside the Vatican as pope—returning to a devotion that has accompanied him since his early days in religious life and throughout his ministry. We explore the origin of the shrine and the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary on the site. As Pope Leo entrusts his pontificate to Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Church looks ahead with faith and hope to see how she will continue to intercede for the Church under her maternal care. EWTN Vatican journalist Bénédicte Cedergren has more.
