Marcantonio Bragadin held Famagusta for eleven months, surrendered on the Pasha's word of safe passage, and was skinned alive in the city square. Seven weeks later, his brother was waiting in front of the Christian line at Lepanto.
Everyone knows the Rosary won Lepanto. This is the whole day, in order: Famagusta, the Holy League, the wind at noon, the galleasses, the head on the pike — and what the Christians found when they climbed down into the Turkish hulls.
Today is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and most Catholics can't tell you why. Four hundred and fifty-five years ago this morning the sun came up on a fleet that had no business winning: for a hundred years no Christian navy had beaten the Sultan's at sea, Cyprus had just fallen, and the Venetians in the fleet had only just learned what the Pasha did to Marcantonio Bragadin at Famagusta. Behind them, at the request of an old Dominican in Rome, the whole Church was on its knees with beads in its hands. Joe McClane tells the story the way it happened — Don John of Austria, Ali Pasha, Barbarigo, old Venier with his crossbow, Uluç Ali, a feverish young soldier named Cervantes, and Pius V, who stopped in the middle of business, went to a window, and told his treasurer to go and thank God.

Figures in this story follow the standard accounts: about 117 Turkish galleys captured and some 80 sunk; roughly 30,000 Turkish dead against about 7,500 Christians; and 12,000 Christian galley slaves freed (some accounts say 15,000). The Pope's words at the window come down to us through his treasurer, Bartolomeo Bussotti, who was in the room.
And that's their Catholic story.
