St. Gregory the Great on Idleness: A Warning Every Catholic Needs to Hear (12 March)

On the great feast of St. Gregory the Great, this reflection explores a powerful spiritual warning against idleness, one of the hidden burdens that leads many souls into sin.
The opening prayer of the Mass asks that we who are oppressed by the burden of our sins may be raised up by the intercession of St. Gregory. In this sermon we reflect on the spiritual danger of idleness and the call to use the gifts God has given us for His glory and the salvation of souls.
Drawing from Sacred Scripture, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Jerome, this meditation shows how idleness weakens the soul and opens the door to disorder. Christ Himself warns that every idle word will be accounted for on the day of judgment (Matthew 12:36).
In a culture filled with noise, chatter, and distraction, this message calls Catholics to deeper prayer, silence, discipline, and action in the service of God.
A soul that truly loves God is never idle.
