St. Ninian, Bishop (16 September): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On September 16th, the Church commemorates Saint Ninian (or Ninias), Bishop, known as the Apostle of the Southern Picts. From his youth, Saint Ninian was devoted to prayer, study, and holiness. Renouncing worldly ambitions, he traveled to Rome, where he grew in Christian virtue and the knowledge of Sacred Scripture.
Filled with zeal for God and compassion for his homeland, Saint Ninian returned to Britain, bringing the light of the Faith to the Cumbrians and the Southern Picts. He softened the heart of King Tudivald, built the famous White House Church (Candida Casa) at Withern in Galloway, and dedicated it to Saint Martin of Tours.
Through his preaching and example, he led multitudes from idolatry to the Catholic faith. Saint Ninian’s legacy endured as Withern became a seminary for holy men, producing many saints. He passed into eternal life on September 16, 432, venerated for his miracles and apostolic zeal.
