In this story from Catholic tradition, a young man is spared from eternal damnation after a terrifying warning. His companion is lost. A soul is shown what hell is like. And through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the prayer of the Hail Mary, his life is changed forever.
But salvation was only the beginning.
After repentance, he enters religious life, becomes a missionary, and is sent to preach the Gospel where Christianity is outlawed. In the end, he is condemned to death and burned alive — choosing martyrdom rather than denying Jesus Christ.
This Lenten reflection confronts us with serious questions:
• What is mortal sin?
• What does true repentance require?
• How powerful is Marian devotion in spiritual warfare?
• Would we choose Christ if it meant suffering?
As we practice prayer, fasting, and almsgiving this Lent, we are reminded that Our Lady’s protection is not an escape from sacrifice — it is a path toward holiness.
St. Alphonsus Liguori writes:
“Under the mantle of Mary, men find shelter from the heat of their passions and the fury of temptation.”
May this story move us to deeper conversion, stronger devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and renewed courage to follow Christ wherever He leads.
