Every student of a difficult text eventually hears the same advice: empty your mind, bring nothing to the text, and let the words speak for themselves.

Bernard Lonergan argues that this produces worse interpreters, not better ones.

In Episode 7 of this series on Method in Theology, we examine Interpretation, the second of Lonergan’s eight functional specialties. Once research has established and assembled the relevant texts, interpretation asks the next unavoidable question: what did the author actually mean?

Lonergan identifies three basic exegetical operations: understanding the text, judging whether that understanding is correct, and stating the meaning one has judged to be correct. But understanding a text itself requires attention to four interrelated dimensions: the object, the words, the author, and, in the most demanding cases, the interpreter.

This episode explores Lonergan’s rejection of the “Principle of the Empty Head,” his account of the hermeneutic circle as a self-correcting process of learning, and the immense scholarly labor required to understand another culture’s common sense. It also examines why the greatest classics may challenge not merely what we know, but the horizon from which we know it.
