Blessed Margaret of Louvain was a young virgin and martyr who surrendered her life rather than consent to mortal sin.
According to Father Alban Butler’s Lives of the Saints, Margaret was attacked and murdered by violent men near the banks of the River Dyle in Louvain, Brabant, during the early thirteenth century. She resisted their sinful intentions and remained faithful to God, even when that fidelity cost her life.
St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that the Christian virtues are professions of our faith and demonstrations of our fidelity to God. Consequently, a Christian who is killed because of his or her steadfast practice of virtue may possess the true crown of martyrdom.
Margaret was initially buried near the riverbank where she suffered. Miracles were soon reported at her grave, and her body was translated to the churchyard of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter in Louvain. A chapel was constructed especially to receive her remains—first in wood and later in stone—and eventually incorporated into the church itself.
Her immemorial veneration in Louvain, the public exposition of her relics and the authorized distribution of those relics testify to her longstanding place among the honored martyrs of Belgium. Her traditional feast is celebrated on September 2.
Blessed Margaret’s short life presents a powerful lesson for Christians living in every age: bodily life is precious, but fidelity to God and the preservation of one’s soul are more precious still. Christian purity is not weakness or mere avoidance of sin. It is a courageous profession that the body and soul belong first to God.
May her intercession strengthen everyone facing temptation, coercion, violence or pressure to compromise the Catholic Faith.
