Saint Heliconis of Thessalonica is commemorated on May 28th as one of the courageous virgin martyrs of the early Church. During the brutal persecutions of Christians in the 3rd century, St. Heliconis traveled to Corinth and boldly proclaimed Jesus Christ as the one true God, urging pagans to abandon idol worship.

Arrested by the governor Pirinus, Saint Heliconis endured horrific tortures for refusing to sacrifice to idols. She was cast into a fiery furnace, yet emerged unharmed through the protection of an angel. Even after having her skin torn and her body burned, she remained steadfast in her faith.

In a dramatic moment of holy courage, St. Heliconis appeared to agree to become a pagan priestess, only to destroy the idols inside the temple once left alone. Enraged, the pagans imprisoned and tortured her further. Christ sent the Archangels Michael and Gabriel to heal her wounds in prison.

When hungry lions were unleashed upon her, the beasts peacefully lay at her feet instead of attacking. Finally, the governor ordered her execution by beheading. Saint Heliconis joyfully gave her life for Christ around the year 244 AD.
