Venerable Nikon of the Kiev Caves, commemorated on March 23, was one of the earliest and most faithful disciples of St Anthony, the founder of the Kiev Caves Monastery.

As a priest and spiritual father, St Nikon tonsured many monks, including the great St Theodosius. His bold obedience to God brought him into conflict with Prince Izyaslav when he refused to force new monks to abandon their calling. Yet through patience and holiness, peace was restored.

Seeking greater solitude, St Nikon withdrew to a remote region where his sanctity drew many followers. There he founded a new monastery dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. Later, he returned to Kiev, where he served humbly under St Theodosius and was eventually chosen as abbot.

Known for his love of sacred books, obedience, and deep ascetic life, St Nikon reposed in 1088 and was laid to rest in the Near Caves of St Anthony.

His life is a powerful witness to courage, obedience, and unwavering devotion to Christ.
