Byzantine Saints: Martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael, of Persia (17 June)

The Holy Martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ishmael of Persia are commemorated on June 17. Born into a noble Persian family, these three brothers were raised in the Christian faith by their devout mother despite their pagan father. As ambassadors of the Persian king, they were sent to negotiate peace with Emperor Julian the Apostate.
When Julian demanded that they participate in pagan sacrifices, the brothers courageously refused. Their steadfast confession of Christ led to brutal torture and eventual martyrdom. Through their suffering they glorified God, remaining faithful until death.
Following their execution, God glorified His saints through miraculous signs. An earthquake concealed their holy bodies, which later emerged untouched and fragrant after the prayers of Christians. Many pagans converted to Christianity after witnessing these miracles.
This account is also connected to the famous tradition of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Mercurius, whose miraculous intervention is associated with the death of Julian the Apostate.
