She never preached a sermon. She never led an army. She never traveled the world as a missionary. She died at just 24 years old.

And yet, St. Thérèse of Lisieux became one of the most beloved saints in the history of the Catholic Church.

From the death of her mother and the illness of her childhood, to her dramatic pilgrimage to Rome where she personally asked Pope Leo XIII for permission to enter Carmel, Thérèse's life was marked by an extraordinary trust in God.

Inside the Carmelite convent, she discovered what became known as the Little Way — a simple but revolutionary path to holiness:

Do small things with great love.

• Sweeping a floor.
• Offering a smile.
• Accepting suffering.
• Serving someone difficult.
• Making a small sacrifice.

Thérèse believed that none of these acts were insignificant when offered to God with love.

But her final years would bring an even greater trial. As tuberculosis slowly took her life, Thérèse entered a profound spiritual darkness and struggled to hold onto her faith in heaven. Yet even when she could not feel God's presence, she continued to trust Him.

She died on September 30, 1897, at just 24 years old.

Within decades, she would be canonized, named Patron of the Missions, and declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II.

Her message remains as powerful today as it was over a century ago:

You don't have to do extraordinary things to become a saint.
Do ordinary things with extraordinary love.
