Discover the inspiring life of St. Valéry (St. Valerius of Leucone), a humble shepherd who became a great monk, missionary, and abbot through his deep love for God and pursuit of holiness.

Born into a poor family, St. Valéry learned to read while tending cattle and memorized the Psalms. His desire for holiness led him from monastery to monastery in search of true spiritual direction, eventually placing himself under the guidance of St. Columbanus, one of the greatest missionary saints of the early Church.

Renowned for his humility and sanctity, St. Valéry was entrusted with simple tasks like tending a garden—yet even there, miracles occurred, as insects avoided his crops while destroying others. His life of prayer, preaching, and solitude led to the founding of a great monastery near the mouth of the Somme River.

Known for his gentleness, even wild animals approached him without fear. After his death around 620 AD, countless miracles confirmed his holiness, and devotion to him spread rapidly throughout France.

This is a powerful reminder that true greatness in God’s eyes comes through humility, obedience, and perseverance in the spiritual life.
