Discover the powerful life of Venerable Makarios, Igoumen of Pelēketḗ, commemorated on April 1st. Born in Constantinople in 785 and orphaned at a young age, Makarios was raised in piety and quickly developed a deep love for Holy Scripture and the things of Heaven.

Drawn to the monastic life, he entered the Monastery of St John the Theologian at Triglia in Bithynia, where he excelled in ascetic struggle and prayer. After the repose of his elder, he became igumen and a spiritual father to many—renowned for his wisdom, miracles, and healing.

During the Iconoclast persecution, St Makarios stood firm in defending the veneration of holy icons. For his faith, he endured imprisonment and exile under Emperor Leo V and later Emperor Michael II. Despite suffering, he remained steadfast, giving thanks to God until his repose around the year 830.

His life is a powerful witness to obedience, courage, and unwavering devotion to Christ.
