What do Gothic Cathedrals, Pink Floyd, and Chappell Roan's dress have in common? They're all examples of 'the grotesque.' But, as John Ruskin defines in The Stones of Venice, there is either creative and positive, or base and vulgar grotesquerie. One is born out of seriousness, imagination, and faith, the other out of mockery and bawdiness.
We've fallen to the dark side of the grotesque, as evidenced by Chappell's (and many other people's) dress on the Grammy's red carpet. To return to the positive grotesque, which is true inventiveness and innovation, we must return to Christ, morality, and a spirit of solemnity.
