Pope Leo XIV has released Magnifica Humanitas, the first encyclical of his pontificate—addressing one of the most urgent issues of our time: artificial intelligence and its impact on humanity. Signed on May 15, the same date Pope Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum in 1891, the document draws a powerful parallel between past industrial upheaval and today’s technological revolution. In it, Pope Leo warns that AI must be “disarmed” of systems that promote domination, exclusion, and even death—insisting it must serve the common good and never be separated from conscience and moral responsibility. The encyclical raises serious concerns about the ethical risks of AI, from exploitative supply chains and violations of privacy to job loss and the growing use of autonomous technologies in warfare. It also calls for greater oversight and global accountability as these tools rapidly evolve. Presented at the Vatican with voices from both the Church and the tech world, Magnifica Humanitas stands as a clear call to responsibility and unity in a new and uncertain era. EWTN Vatican Correspondent Javier Romero reports.
