September 17 — the Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Theoda, a noble Christian from Cappadocia who suffered under Emperor Alexander Severus. Summoned by the governor Syblus, St. Theoda boldly confessed Christ. Though raked with iron hooks, chained, and imprisoned, the Lord preserved her. Cast into a red-hot furnace, she stood unharmed between two youths in white garments, glorifying God, while the flames scorched her persecutors.

On the governor’s return from Byzantium, new torments were ordered: the saint was thrown onto red-hot iron, brought to a pagan temple in Nicaea and compelled to sacrifice. Through her prayer the idols fell and shattered. Even when stretched out to be sawn through, the power of God kept her unharmed. At last, St. Theoda was beheaded, and Bishop Sophronius laid her body to rest.
