On April 24th, the Church commemorates the heroic martyrs Saint Valentine and Saint Pasikrates (Pacrates), soldiers from Durostorum in Moesia (modern-day Bulgaria), who gave their lives for Christ in the year 288.

During a brutal persecution under the Roman governor, these young soldiers boldly confessed their Christian faith. Refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols, Saint Pasikrates even spat at the idol of Apollo, demonstrating his total rejection of false gods.

Despite pressure from his own brother to outwardly conform, Pasikrates declared a profound truth: that the body may suffer and perish, but the soul remains immortal. Saint Valentine likewise stood firm, ready to endure suffering for Christ.

As they were led to execution, Pasikrates’ mother followed, encouraging him not to fear death but to remain faithful to Christ until the end. Both martyrs were tortured and ultimately beheaded, sealing their witness with their blood.

Their story is a powerful reminder of courage, truth, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
