Journey into the profound mystery of Good Friday as we reflect on the Cross, the central symbol of Christianity and its true meaning in our lives. Inspired by the writings of St John Henry Newman and the powerful imagery of Cima da Conegliano, this final Lenten reflection from Fr George Bowen invites us to rediscover the sacrifice of Christ and the deeper purpose of life.

In this final Lenten reflection, we prepare our hearts for Good Friday by contemplating the Cross.
The Cross is not merely a symbol, but the revelation of God’s love through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Yet, as Newman warns, it is a symbol that can lose its meaning if we take it for granted.
Why does the Cross matter? What does it reveal about the meaning of life, suffering, and human purpose? In a world often driven by distraction, pleasure, and superficial concerns, this reflection challenges us to step back and ask life’s deepest questions. Newman reminds us that without the Cross as our 'interpretative key' we can find ourselves lost in confusion and uncertainty.
This Good Friday meditation explores, the deeper meaning of the Cross and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, why the Cross is the key to understanding life, suffering, and salvation and how modern life can cause us to overlook what truly matters.
Newman’s words remind us that we are invited to see the world differently, to measure human ambition, suffering and achievement in the light of the Cross. Everything finds its meaning in Christ’s sacrifice: 'It is their centre and their interpretation.'
This reflection also prepares us spiritually for the joy of Easter Sunday. The Cross is not the end. it is the path to resurrection, hope, and new life.
About Good Friday
Good Friday is one of the most important days in Christianity, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. Observed during Holy Week on the Friday before Easter Sunday, it marks the moment that Jesus gave his life through sacrificial love for the salvation of humanity.
Despite its somber nature, Good Friday is called 'good' because of the profound hope it represents, as through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ comes forgiveness, redemption and the promise of eternal life.
