An EgyptAir Boeing 767 left New York for Cairo just after 1:20 a.m. on October 31, 1999, and 30 minutes later it was in the Atlantic with 217 people aboard. No distress call. No storm. No other traffic anywhere near it.

American and Egyptian investigators read the same flight recorders and reached opposite conclusions, and the whole case turned on how you hear one short Arabic prayer the relief first officer repeated as the jet went down.
