In this video clip from 2024, Fr. Chad Ripperger restricts the definition of "exorcist" only to a stable, mandated exorcist for a diocese. He rejects the label "exorcist" as applied to ad actum (temporary) exorcists.

This is a much narrower definition than provided by canon law itself:

Can. 1172: § 1. No one may legitimately pronounce exorcisms over the possessed unless he has obtained a special and express license from the local Ordinary.

§ 2. This license is to be granted by the local Ordinary only to a priest endowed with piety, knowledge, prudence and integrity of life.

The USCCB definition of exorcist includes both stable exorcists and ad actum exorcists, and does not restrict the title to the former.
