When the largest remaining antebellum plantation house Nottoway Plantation burned to the ground just a few weeks ago, people online erupted not with horror but with joy. Then shortly after, the historic St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Maria Stein Ohio also burned while some similarly cheered the building's destruction. This is the new iconoclasm--the total rejection of the sacred, the beautiful, the transcendent, or the historic due to political or religious reasons.
NOTE I am not suggesting that Protestants as a whole support this, nor that most people rejoice at the destruction of churches. But the fact that some do reveals a deeper problem-- a growing cultural impulse to destroy anything that is beautiful, sacred, or historical if it challenges our modern narratives.
