John 11: 19 - 27

The text reflects on the Gospel story of Lazarus. It presents Martha and Mary of Bethany as examples of faith: they send word that Lazarus is ill, but Jesus delays His arrival and Lazarus dies. Even so, Martha does not give in to despair or anger. Instead, she expresses deep confidence that Jesus can still act, and she professes faith in Him as the Christ and Son of God.

The central message is that faith does not require understanding everything God does. Like Peter’s response in the Gospel and with Mary’s simple words at Cana, highlighting a spirituality of surrender: bringing needs before God and trusting that He knows best. The believer’s response in moments of suffering or confusion should be, above all, trust: “Jesus, I trust in You.”

The Expecto Patronum (I expect everything from my Patron) from Harry Potter is an image of this trust. Just as Harry calls on a protector and trusts on the appearance of the defender when danger surrounds him, we should call on God with confidence, remembering that one is loved and defended. In that sense, the expression becomes a symbol of hope, not magic: waiting for the Lord, trusting Him as Protector, and believing that whatever He allows will ultimately be for the best.
