Pope Leo XIV warned about the risks of allowing artificial intelligence and technology to weaken human relationships or replace decisions that belong to the human conscience.
During his Sept. 16 general audience in St. Peter’s Square, the pope acknowledged that AI, social media and other technologies can break down barriers and bridge distances, but cautioned that relationships are becoming increasingly virtual and less personal.
“There is a risk of becoming accustomed to delegating to algorithms decisions that are the sole preserve of the human conscience,” Pope Leo said.
Continuing his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council’s “Gaudium et Spes,” the pope called for greater respect for human dignity, social justice and the common good, urging people to move beyond an individualistic mindset and build a more humane world.
