St. Athanasius the Athonite transformed Mount Athos into the greatest center of Eastern monasticism. Born around A.D. 920 in Trebizond, he abandoned a successful academic career in Constantinople to embrace the monastic life, eventually founding the Great Lavra—the first great monastery on the Holy Mountain.
