In this episode of The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we explore the remarkable life of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, one of the great saints of medieval Russia and a holy woman revered by Russians, Ruthenians, and Lithuanians alike.

After the conversion of Russia to Christianity and the adoption of the Byzantine liturgy, the spiritual life of the Russian people flourished. Among the earliest saints of the Russian Church stands St. Euphrosyne — a princess who abandoned worldly privilege to embrace the monastic life and dedicate herself entirely to Christ.

At only twelve years old, the daughter of Prince Vatslav entered religious life near the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Polotsk. Living in solitude, copying sacred books, helping the poor and sick, founding convents, traveling to Constantinople, and eventually making pilgrimage to the Holy Land, her life became a shining example of holiness, humility, charity, and devotion.
