I made a video in the past about how it used to be much more common for priests to wear black chasubles for funeral masses. But it wasn’t just the stark black that made these stand out. The garments often pictured memento mori imagery to remind the congregation that we all must die. Skulls, teardrops, and souls in purgatory were depicted in the chasuble. It’s almost impossible to imagine seeing something like this today.
