Bishop Donald Lippert explains that when someone dies unexpectedly, especially a respected elder or a young person, many communities do not ask whether death occurred naturally. Instead, the question becomes: "Who caused it?" Traditional diviners may be consulted. A suspect is identified. Frequently the accused is an elderly woman. Without intervention, the consequences can be horrific, including violence, torture, and even murder. This is why the Church has made combating sorcery accusations one of its major pastoral priorities. Remarkably, that effort includes not only preaching and education, but even community initiatives designed to challenge destructive beliefs and promote reconciliation.
