This famous St. Benedict miracle comes from the early life of the Catholic saint who founded the communities of Benedictine monks and wrote the Rule of St. Benedict, a guide to prayer, work, and Christian discipline that shaped Western monastic life.
After leaving Rome, St. Benedict withdrew into the mountains to live a life of prayer, fasting, and solitude. Eventually monks from a nearby monastery asked him to become their abbot. But his life of obedience, penance, and devotion to Christ proved too demanding for some of them.
According to the traditional Catholic story of St. Benedict, resentment grew among the monks and a deadly plot was formed.
At a meal they placed a poisoned cup of wine before him.
Before drinking, St. Benedict made the sign of the cross over the cup.
Immediately the vessel shattered in his hands, revealing the poison and saving his life.
Rather than accuse the monks, St. Benedict quietly left the community and returned to the life of prayer he had chosen from the beginning.
This moment from the life of St. Benedict reminds Catholics that fidelity to Christ does not always mean winning a conflict. Sometimes faithfulness means trusting God, walking away, and continuing the path of prayer.
Stories like this are why St. Benedict remains one of the most beloved Catholic saints, remembered for his miracles, the Rule of St. Benedict, and the spiritual protection associated with the St. Benedict medal.
