John 10: 27 - 28

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.

Animals have selective auditory cognition. They don't recognize every voice. But sheep know the sound of their shepherd. And Jesus wants us to be very familiar with his voice, especially when we are tempted or confused by other voices.
