On this First Sunday of Septuagesima, we are reminded of one of the most forgotten yet precious seasons of the traditional Catholic liturgical calendar — the sacred preparation for Lent.

Drawing from Sacred Scripture, St. Alphonsus Liguori, St. Augustine, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and St. Francis Xavier, this sermon confronts the central question of human existence:

“What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?”

Septuagesima is a training ground for penance, a time to begin denying the flesh, detaching from worldly ambition, and focusing on the one business that truly matters: eternal salvation.

The world teaches us to labor endlessly for wealth, honor, and pleasure — yet neglects the soul. But Christ teaches that if the soul is lost, all is lost.
