Luke 11: 29 - 32

Jesus referers to the “sign of Jonah,” using Jonah’s reluctant preaching and Nineveh’s dramatic repentance as a model for how people today should respond to Christ.

Just as the pagan city of Nineveh was spared when it humbled itself, fasted, and changed its behaviour, Jesus’ contemporaries—and by extension modern believers—are called to urgent penance rather than demanding further signs, since they already have someone greater than Jonah in Jesus himself.

The moving examples of the sacrifices of the Fatima children can inspire us in our everyday acts of self-denial (like eating less of what one enjoys, doing chores promptly, or smiling at someone annoying).

We should ask the Holy Spirit for “interior fluidity”: a humble, open heart ready to be reshaped by grace through concrete, ordinary acts of conversion.
