Blessed Herculaneum of Piegaro was one of the greatest Franciscan preachers of the 15th century. A native of Piegaro in Italy, he entered the Franciscan Order of Strict Observance and lived a life of deep prayer, fasting, penance, and holiness.

After his ordination to the priesthood, Blessed Herculaneum became renowned for preaching on the Passion of Christ with such power that entire crowds were moved to tears. His sermons inspired countless souls to repentance and conversion.

During a siege of the city of Lucca, Blessed Herculaneum urged the people not to surrender but instead to trust in God, do penance, and reform their lives. His prophecy proved true when the Florentines unexpectedly lifted the siege after Easter.

Known for severe austerities, long fasts, and profound sanctity, Blessed Herculaneum died in the convent he founded in Tuscany. Five years later, his incorrupt body was discovered despite being buried in a damp place. Pope Pius IX beatified him in 1860.
