St. Maguil, in Latin Madelgisilus, Recluse in Picardy (30 May): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Saint Maguil (Madelgisilus), honored on May 30, was an Irish holy man and devoted companion of Saint Fursey. After Saint Fursey's death, Maguil journeyed into France and joined the monks of Saint-Riquier, where his holiness and virtue inspired all who knew him. Seeking to avoid the praise and admiration of others, he withdrew into solitude at Monstrelet on the River Authie, embracing a life of prayer, penance, and contemplation.
During his years as a hermit, Saint Maguil formed a deep friendship with a holy English recluse named Volgan. The two lived together in Christian charity until Volgan's final illness. Before his death, Volgan lovingly reminded Maguil to place his trust in God rather than give way to excessive grief, teaching a final lesson in Christian detachment and hope.
Saint Maguil survived his friend only a short time, dying around the year 685. He was first buried alongside Volgan before his relics were later transferred to a church dedicated in his honor near Saint-Riquier. His life stands as a powerful witness to humility, friendship in Christ, love of solitude, and perseverance in prayer.
