On April 23rd, the Church commemorates the holy martyrs Anatolius and Protoleon—Roman soldiers who were converted to Christ after witnessing the miraculous endurance of St. George.

As St. George suffered brutal tortures for refusing to renounce Christ, including the terrifying “great wheel” fitted with sharp blades, all believed he had perished. Yet through divine intervention, an angel of the Lord restored him. When Emperor Diocletian and his court saw George alive, they were struck with astonishment.

Among them were two high-ranking officers, Anatolius and Protoleon, each a chiliarch commanding a thousand men. Moved by the undeniable miracle, they boldly proclaimed:
“One is the true God, the God of the Christians.”

For this confession of faith, they were immediately condemned and beheaded, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Their story reminds us that truth, when witnessed, demands a response—and courage in that moment leads to eternal glory.
