Saint Meriadec of Vannes is remembered as a bishop of extraordinary charity, humility, and love for the poor. Though he inherited a great estate and considerable wealth, he gradually gave everything away, especially to those in need. Seeking a life of prayer and penance, he withdrew to a solitary place in Brittany where his reputation for holiness spread throughout the region.

Despite his desire for a hidden life, the clergy and faithful of Vannes, supported by the bishops of the province, compelled him to become their bishop. As Bishop of Vannes, Saint Meriadec increased his works of charity and considered himself a father to all who were suffering. Beneath his episcopal garments, he wore a rough hair shirt and practiced continual mortification and humility.
