Blessed Bishop Pavel (Paul) Gojdič stands among the great Catholic martyrs of the twentieth century. A Byzantine Catholic bishop in Slovakia, he refused every offer of freedom, privilege, and safety if it meant abandoning communion with the Holy Father and submitting the Church to communist control.

Arrested in 1950 after a show trial, Bishop Gojdič spent the final decade of his life imprisoned for remaining faithful to Christ and His Church. Though stripped of his cathedral, his vestments, and his earthly freedom, he never ceased being a shepherd to those around him—even his fellow prisoners and prison guards witnessed his charity and steadfast faith.

This homily reflects on the courage of Blessed Pavel Gojdič and reminds us that while few Christians today may be called to martyrdom, every disciple is called to daily fidelity. Small compromises prepare the soul either for future faithfulness—or future failure.

May Blessed Bishop Pavel Gojdič obtain for us the grace to remain faithful to Christ and His Holy Catholic Church until the very end.
