St. Zephyrinus, Pope & Martyr (26 August): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Discover the inspiring life of Saint Zephyrinus, Pope and Martyr of the early Church, whose feast is celebrated on August 26. As successor of Pope Victor I, he led the Church during the brutal persecutions of Emperor Severus (202β211). Known as the defender of Christβs divinity, Saint Zephyrinus courageously opposed heresies from Marcion, Praxeas, Valentinus, and the Montanists, while guiding and consoling Christians in times of trial.
He reigned as pope for 17 years, dying in 219, and was buried in the cemetery of Saint Callixtus. Though not executed, his steadfast witness earned him the title of martyr.
