Byzantine Saints: Saint Liberius, Pope of Rome (27 August)

St. Liberius, Bishop of Rome from 352 to 366, stood firm in defending Orthodoxy against the Arian heresy. Though pressured by Emperor Constantius and briefly exiled for refusing to condemn St. Athanasius of Alexandria, he remained a steadfast confessor of the faith. After being forced to sign the semi-Arian Council of Sirmium, he repented and worked tirelessly to restore Orthodoxy in Rome. Remembered as a courageous defender of the Church, he died peacefully in 366.
