Today we remember St. Asterius the Senator, a courageous Christian martyr who remained faithful to Jesus Christ despite holding a privileged position as a Roman senator during an age of persecution.

Living during the reign of the pagan Roman emperors Valerian and Gallienus, St. Asterius refused to allow worldly status, political power, or fear of persecution to separate him from his Christian faith.

While in Palestine, Asterius witnessed pagan practices associated with an idol. Through prayer, he confronted the demonic influence connected with the pagan worship and demonstrated his unwavering confidence in the power of God.

St. Asterius also witnessed the martyrdom of St. Marinus. After the execution, Asterius removed his senatorial garment, wrapped the martyr's body in it, and personally carried the sacred remains on his shoulders to be reverently buried.

This courageous public act of Christian devotion would cost Asterius his own life.

For honoring the body of a Christian martyr and openly demonstrating his faith, St. Asterius was condemned to death and beheaded around A.D. 260.

His story reminds us that worldly position means little compared with fidelity to Christ. Asterius possessed the honor of a Roman senator, yet he was willing to surrender status, security, and ultimately his life rather than deny his faith.

May his example inspire us to remain courageous when following Christ comes with a cost.
