How do you know if it's God speaking to you, or the enemy, or just your own voice in your head?
This Sunday, Catholic churches around the world are reading John 10, one of Chris's favorite passages in all of Scripture — about the Good Shepherd who calls his sheep by name and leads them to life abundant. But to follow that voice, you have to be able to recognize it.
In this reflection, Chris breaks down 5 practical, St. Ignatius-inspired ways to discern the voice of God from the voice of the enemy — and shares powerful stories, including a miraculous healing at Lourdes and a moving journal entry from his wife's conversion at World Youth Day 1993, when she heard the voice of her shepherd and could never unhear it.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Have you ever felt a strong sense of God "calling" you toward something — or away from something? Looking back, how did you know it was from him?
St. Ignatius says the enemy's voice often feels comfortable at first but leads to confusion and anxiety over time, while God's voice may challenge us but leaves peace and clarity. Can you think of a time you experienced either of these in your own life?
Chris says, "Conscience is the most secret core and sanctuary of a person — where we are alone with God." What does it mean to you that your conscience is a sanctuary? What does it look like to protect it — or to slowly silence it?
The sheep in this Gospel know their shepherd's voice because they spend time with him. Honestly, how much time do you spend in Scripture, silent prayer, or listening to God? What's one small way you could grow in this?
Chris shares how his wife "could not unhear the voice of her shepherd" once she truly listened. Is there a truth about your faith — or about who Jesus is — that you've heard and can't un-know? How has that shaped you?
"I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." — John 10:10
