On April 9th, the Church honors St. Eupsychius of Cappadocia, a noble Christian martyr who lived during the reign of Julian the Apostate, one of the most infamous enemies of the early Church.

As paganism attempted a final resurgence under Julian, Christians in Caesarea (formerly Mazaka) boldly destroyed the last remaining pagan temple dedicated to Fortune. Enraged, Julian stripped the city of its honors, imposed heavy taxes, confiscated Church property, and unleashed persecution.

Among those who suffered was St. Eupsychius, a newly married nobleman who gave his life for Christ. Despite brutal oppression, the faithful responded not with fear—but with greater devotion—building a church in his honor and celebrating his martyrdom.

Eight years later, St. Basil the Great himself commemorated this courageous witness, inviting bishops to honor the triumph of faith over tyranny.
