Discover the life of St. Wanus of Famp, honored on January 9, as recorded in The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler.

Compiled from fragments of ancient histories—some dating as late as the 12th century—this account tells of a noble governor of Normandy who, though devoted to hunting and worldly rank, lived a deeply pious life. Through a powerful dream inspired by St. Eulalia of Barcelona, St. Wanus was reminded of Christ’s words:

“It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to be saved.”

Moved by this divine warning, he renounced the world and dedicated his wealth and influence to the Church. He assisted St. Vril in building churches dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul at Futel, and founded a great monastery and convent in the Valley of Fum, honoring the Holy Trinity.

Under the guidance of St. Owen and St. Vril, the holy abbess Hildemara of Bordeaux governed a vast religious community where 360 nuns maintained uninterrupted prayer—day and night—through continuous choirs.

St. Wanus died around the year 688, and his relics are preserved in a rich shrine at the Abbey Church of Our Lady at Ham, belonging to the Regular Canons of St. Geneviève. He is honored in the Gallican, Benedictine, and Roman Martyrologies, and remains the titular patron of multiple churches in Aquitaine and Normandy.
