Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, is one of the Vatican’s most experienced voices on the Christian East. Having served for decades as a papal nuncio in some of the Church’s most fragile regions—including the Caucasus, Belarus, and Ukraine—he now oversees relations with the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with Rome.
In this interview with EWTN Vatican’s Andreas Thonhauser, Cardinal Gugerotti reflects on the impact of war and political instability in the Middle East, particularly as tensions affect historic Christian communities in Iran and the wider region. He also explains the unique role of Vatican diplomacy, which operates without military power or political interests, and how the Holy See works to support civilians, refugees, and prisoners during times of conflict.
The cardinal also discusses the Good Friday collection for the Holy Land (Pro Terra Sancta)—an initiative supporting Christian communities and safeguarding holy sites across the region.
