St. Frumentius, known as the Apostle of Ethiopia and first Bishop of Aksum, is commemorated on October 27. This account, taken from The Lives of the Saints by Fr. Alban Butler, tells how divine providence used tragedy and exile to bring the Gospel to Ethiopia.

Born in the 4th century, Frumentius and his brother Aedesius were taken captive after a voyage gone wrong. Rising from slaves to royal officials, they used their influence to introduce Christianity to the Ethiopian court. Frumentius would later travel to St. Athanasius of Alexandria, who consecrated him as Ethiopia’s first bishop—laying the foundations for one of the world’s oldest Christian nations.
