Was Pope Leo XIV's visit to France a turning point for the Catholic Church in Europe?
In this special episode of REGINA UNSCRIPTED, Mark Lambert retraces Pope Leo XIV's apostolic journey through Paris, Lourdes and Metz, exploring the extraordinary scenes of Catholic devotion and the Holy Father's powerful message to an increasingly secular Europe.
From thousands of young people cheering in the Stade de France to the profound silence that fell as the Cross and Holy Tunic of Argenteuil were presented, the visit offered a striking reminder that the Catholic faith remains very much alive in France.
But beyond the crowds and celebrations, Pope Leo XIV delivered a challenging message about the dignity of human life, the place of Christianity in public life, and the moral foundations of European civilisation.
Addressing President Emmanuel Macron and France's political leaders, the Pope challenged the idea that religious faith should be confined to private life. He spoke openly about assisted dying, the ethical dangers of technological progress, and the responsibility of governments to protect the most vulnerable.
At Notre-Dame Cathedral and before vast congregations in Paris, he reminded the French people that their Christian inheritance is more than a collection of historic buildings. It is a living faith, capable of transforming lives today.
For Mark, however, one of the most moving moments came at Lourdes.
As Pope Leo knelt before Our Lady at the Grotto of Massabielle, Mark reflects on his own family's deeply personal connection to the shrine. It was at Lourdes that he met his wife, and where she later told him they were expecting their first son. Seeing the Holy Father praying in a place so intimately connected to his own life was an unforgettable moment.
From Lourdes, where the Pope spoke powerfully against euthanasia and assisted suicide, to Metz, where he called Europe to rediscover the Christian foundations of peace and reconciliation, this was a visit with a message extending far beyond France.
Could these extraordinary days mark the beginning of a renewed Catholic confidence in Europe?
