St. Andrew of Crete (c. 660–740) was one of the greatest hymnographers and preachers of the early Church. Born in Damascus and later becoming a monk in Jerusalem, he rose to become Archbishop of Gortyna in Crete and played an important role during one of the Church's great theological struggles against the Monothelite heresy.
